Bio
I have over 15 years of teaching experience and have taught students of all ages. I not only undertake general teaching tasks but also strive to develop students’ appreciation of music through practical skills and to encourage them to expand their interests and creativity through music.
Flutist Michelle Kim is a distinguished graduate of the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and Music Theory, studying under Montreal Symphony Principal Flutist Timothy Hutchins. She further enriched her musical education through an exchange program at the Sibelius Academy (Sibelius-Akatemia) in Helsinki, Finland, under Professor Mikael Helasvuo. Michelle also holds a Master of Secondary Teaching from Griffith University, Australia, combining her performance expertise with a strong foundation in music pedagogy.
Beginning her musical journey in Seoul with piano lessons at the age of five, Michelle’s passion for music flourished, leading her to commence flute studies at twelve. Just three years later, at fifteen, she was appointed Principal Flutist of the London Youth Symphony. Michelle has been a member of the National Youth Band of Canada and the McGill Symphony Orchestra, and during her time in Helsinki, she performed with various ensembles including the Helsinki University Orchestra, NYKY Ensemble, Academy Winds, and the Sibelius Academy Opera Orchestra.
A recipient of numerous awards from the Canadian Music Competition and the Kiwanis Music Festival, Michelle has performed concertos with professional orchestras, showcasing her exceptional musicianship and dedication to musical excellence. She has also had the privilege of working with world-renowned artists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Susan Hoeppner, and Richard Lapointe at Le Domaine Forget Music Academy.
Michelle’s extensive performance background deeply informs her teaching philosophy. She shares her passion and expertise with students of all ages, nurturing the next generation of musicians. With over fifteen years of teaching experience, she has taught more than a hundred private students across Canada, Korea, and Australia—from young beginners to advanced adult learners. Michelle not only teaches flute technique and musicianship but also fosters each student’s appreciation and curiosity for music.
Each year, she organises an annual student concert, providing her students with the opportunity to perform, celebrate their progress, and develop confidence on stage. She has also led youth orchestras and flute choirs, creating collaborative and inspiring ensemble experiences. Michelle finds teaching as fascinating and rewarding as performing, and she is dedicated to nurturing a lifelong love of music in every student.
